Bassari combines carefully placed diffused colors in contrast with graceful yet bold brush strokes, creating a unique blend of essence of the subject and spirit of the artist. The figures in his paintings are divine souls, innocent and pure, floating in an atmosphere of melancholy happiness. These figures are the essence of Sasha’s world—Gentle Surrealism. 



Sasha Bassari is the embodiment of a child. He is a child who doesn’t understand the concept of lying, and he believes anyone and everyone.  He becomes attached to places and things. 

He lives in a tiny, one-room apartment at the top floor of an old building in the historical center of St. Petersburg.  It is so small, in fact, that he must move his painting materials before he can cook. Sasha has memorized every roof and chimney visible from his one-window view, and he can’t bear to part with them. 



When asked how his style was born, Bassari slyly says that one night he was lying awake, and a nymph of an unbelievable beauty flew into his room. She smiled at him, but when he extended his hand to touch her she disappeared.  He heard music and dreamt this wonderful world that he now vividly depicts.  Bassari says this is not a separate world, but rather he sees what most people do not—that we are sharing our world, our streets, our forest, and our rivers with creatures that are too afraid of us to make themselves visible.
