Keith Haring Skateboards Debut at Agenda Trade Show

In the past, artists have used nearly everything under the sun as their canvas. From traditional materials like canvas and, paper, to concrete walls, art can happen anywhere. And thanks to a recent collaboration, the Keith Haring Studio will now display Haring’s iconic art on skateboards.

Haring was a pop artist whose work centered on New York City in the 1980s. He established the Keith Haring Foundation in 1989, whose mandate is to provide funding and imagery to AIDS organizations and children’s programs like Kinderstern, and to expand the audience for Haring’s work through exhibitions, publications and the licensing of his images.

Alien Workshop is the skateboard company that is creating the boards. A brief statement released from the Alien Workshop explains: “As a skateboard brand that has evolved since it’s inception in 1990, Alien Workshop has become known for bold and challenging graphic concepts. This collaboration could not find a better pairing aesthetically and conceptually. It is our aim to further Haring’s message through our work.” In the past, Alien Workshop has collaborated with the estate of Andy Warhol, who was a contemporary of Haring’s.

It’s ironic that such beautiful, iconic, treasured art is being screened on the bottom of skateboards—where the images will be marred and destroyed when ridden. But perhaps that speaks to the vey temporary, and ever-changing nature of art.

The boards debuted at the recent Agenda trade show in Long Beach, California, with plans for an extensive apparel offering shortly thereafter.
